Chipmunks as Pets
Chipmunks are wild animals and I do not usually recommend that wild animals be used as pets. With that said, there is a certain availability of domesticated and bred Chipmunks that can be trained to do tricks and kept in a large cage.
When purchasing a Chipmunk as a pet, insure that it was bred in captivity and that the Chipmunk has a healthy looking coat and tail and bright eyes. Do not purchase a Chipmunk younger than 8 weeks old as they will not yet be weaned but make sure to buy one younger than 16 weeks to insure a friendly and gentle Chipmunk.
You should take your Chipmunk in for regular checkups and shots. The most important thing for a Chipmunk is a large outdoor fenced area instead of a small cage indoors. Use a fine mesh and extend the fencing in the ground to prevent digging.
Feed your Chipmunk seeds and fruits and vegetables. Do not feed the Chipmunk every day but encourage natural storage and foraging activities. A salt lick and a rodent bottle (used for hamsters) will also be needed.
